OP, you should try Deus Ex. The first one.
I know it's old, but it's very neat because after you do things you know there were other ways you could have done it and get into the feeling that you want to go through the game again and see if an idea worked and how much of an impact it can make on things.
There is a quest with a guy who wants a gun to fight off badguys. You can give him a gun or not. If you give him a gun he can defend himself, if you don't he can die or you can defend him. You can continue talking to him and give him more stuff or alter his motivations to open new quests paths, or get on his bad side by telling him more and more what he's trying to do is stupid.
He has many different quest paths that can branch from that one that go into later parts of the game.
I gave him my gun and tried to convince him that what he wanted was wrong and keep pressing him until he snapped at me and tried to kill me with the gun I gave him. Then I killed him and picked open his safe. It closes all his quest branches to me, but it was cool having the option.
That's just one NPC in the game! You'll honestly get the feeling of 'what if I did this instead?' many times in the game.
Deus Ex 2 tried to emulate the freedom and emergent gameplay feeling of the first, but fell flat on it's face.

The FFX Sphere Grid thing was pretty nifty.
Spore is going to be very unique.
Black & White had very interesting mechanics as well.
Deus Ex 1 was a great game.
I suppose Mario Galaxy is a superb game with the gravity effects.
I'll just say Wii and leave it at that.

Yea, come to think of it. Most FF games had their unique features.
Spore is actaully just a remake of an old game (Sim Life)

Have a look at this guy's ideas.
Lots of potential for really really innovative fun stuff.
(Head-tracking is an absolute beauty of an idea.)

That head tracking idea looks like it can make tons of types of media fun to use on a screen.
Holy hot damn.
I buy a wii if they make games that use that idea.

Half Life 2's physics were atrocious. You redeemed yourself with Homeworld, the best RTS ever made.

yeah Deus Ex was like a revelation to me, the cyberpunk feel to it, the myriad of ways to solve a problem were just staggering.
your end game toon could be anything from a unstoppable TANK with literally lasers coming out of his eyes and missiles out his ass to a geeky hacker whos only weapons consisted of packs of crisps, coke and some nifty nano tech.
Deus Ex2 was such a letdown, console port and dumbing down for the masses was a bad idea.
no one has mentioned System Shock 1&2. Im not sure if any other games before those are worth mentioning in regards to FPS/RPG hybrids.
to the OP: Give STALKER a whirl, it is a hybrid but it has managed the (rather incredible imo) tour de force of leaving out experience points and attribute stats, the immersion is such that you (the player) actually get better and thus "level up", of course there is a trick to how it does that but...its still pretty awesome.

I still haven't found a game with better physics. Sure you can't blow up the side of a building or anything, but for the first time objects don't float.
I also forgot to mention, HL2 has the best sounds.

Shadow of the Collossus's loneliness and overall hugeness. Seriously the only game I've ever played that has made me go wow. Huge open landscapes, massive bosses and a fairly good, if not slightly strange story line. More please

Wow, this is amazing!
I really wish I had enough money to buy all these games that I don't yet own.
Meanwhile I updated the list alittle bit, I might put games with playable music in there later if I can find more than 2.
So far I have LOTRO and Zelda OoT (Which doesnt have many notes but you can still play your own songs)
Thanks to you all for helping me make this list.

Baldurs Gate and Baldurs Gate 2 and the expansion, Throne of Bhaal: you start BG1 as a boy wiping tables in a tavern, and by the time you finish Throne of Bhaal (you port your characters between), you are a god. Between all 3 games, you really seen your character grow in power every tiny step at a time, and it's all very realistic (game-wise). Levelling up done about as good as I've seen it.
agree with Redfeather: Deus Ex 1 was epic, and it was built with many plots, puzzles, obstacles, and fights that could be tackled in very different ways, depending on how you roleplayed and built your character (playing to their strengths)

Half Life 2 has the best physics? Well if you don't want to spend any money on a game, you can download and try CellFactor: Revolution.
Ragnarok Online
-marriage
Crysis
-dynamic day/night cycle, weather (i.e. tornadoes, and the rain of crabs, chickens or whatever that follows)
-unique game features
*nanosuit
*zero-gravity environment
*real-time weapon modding
*real clouds... not that 2D or skymap shite
WarCraft III
-day/night cycle
Sins of a Solar Empire
-such huge scale and 3D battles like Homeworld <3
Sorry... Lists didn't work for me.
